Wine tasting can be a little bit more thoughtful than just wine drinking. It’s that pause after you sip.

But it’s your adventure! You should know enough so you are comfortable wherever you are tasting wine!

I obviously love both wine tasting and wine drinking.

There is a time and a place for both in my life.

I love wine tastings because I usually get to taste a whole bunch, or maybe just a small bunch, of wines.

There are so many different kinds of wine tastings. There are formal wine tastings where you are studying to become certified at some level in wine.

Not talking about those here!

The ones I am talking about here are less formal affairs. It can be tastes of a few different wines at your neighborhood wine store. Even Trader Joe’s wines have these occasionally.

It can be larger events where dozens of wines are available.

I look at wine tastings as the best way to compare wines and see what I like and what I don’t.

This way, I can buy more of what I like and avoid what I don’t.

Also, I love getting together with wine fans. They’re the best.

As I said, you should be comfortable at any type of wine tasting.

You don’t have to DO anything or know anything specific for a tasting.

Confidence is different from arrogance. I read this article about how to be a bad ass at a wine tasting.

Don’t be any kind of an ass no matter how much you know.

Wine tastings should be fun and welcoming. Wine fans are always learning. Hopefully they want to share that knowledge and that joy!

With wine tasting it is basically the 5 S’s.

See

Swirl

Smell

Sip

Savor

I don’t over analyze the seeing and the smelling. I look at them like the coming attractions at a movie.

Another way to look at it is the smell of food before you eat it. You don’t have to name everything you smell. The smell hopefully makes you excited to eat the food.

There are many people who view this in a different way.

Some people want to name everything they see and smell. I swear some of them are making it up on the spot.

Some people are honestly gifted with this, but YOU don’t have to name anything.

Find your own comfort zone here.

The swirling is to help release the aroma. If you don’t smell that much, it could be the particular grape type. I go over this in the YouTube video above. Just saying.

The sipping is the fun part. Enjoy!

See if there is something to savor.

The finish is where the magic happens. Hopefully the good flavors go on and on.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with just drinking wine.

However, there should always be enjoyment and fun involved.
