Affordable vs. Expensive Wine: Can You Really Taste the Difference?

3 red wines in glasses

Value is relative!

Meaning?

Some people find joy from drinking what they think is expensive!

However… SPOILER ALERT:

Most people really cannot tell what is expensive and what is not!!!

Some people can tell by looking at a wine label. There are certain areas or producers that are historically expensive.

If you see Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, often abbreviated as DRC, you can be positive it is insanely expensive. If you see Chateau Lafite Rothschild you can also be sure. I could go on and on with the list.

Scarcity alone makes many of these wines mind bogglingly expensive.

I have a post called: Top 4 things you should know about the cost of your wine. Check it out.

The most important one for me is:

How much the consumer is willing to spend.

While some people get joy from spending a lot of money, most people do not want to be spending a ton of money on wine they do not enjoy!

Do not assume that more money always gets you “better” wine! Nope!

Back to my original point..

Most people really cannot taste the difference between expensive and not expensive wine.

There are countless stories about this!!!

No one wants to feel like an idiot, so don’t humiliate someone about this. (There are a lot of stories about this, too!)

Instead, challenge yourself!!

That’s exactly what I did with my YouTube editor and costar on one of my wildly unscripted YouTube videos. Check it out here:

The list of the wines we tasted are in the description for the YouTube video.

Let me be clear that inexpensive or affordable does not mean cheap. We did use that word in the video. Shockingly enough it was not for the least expensive wine at all!!

Inexpensive reflects the price.

Affordable is actually just what the individual consumer is comfortable spending.

Cheap is a lack of perceived quality or enjoyment.

You don’t want to spend even $5 on a cheap wine. You absolutely don’t want to spend 10 times that!!!

I greatly resent when wines are described as cheap because they are low cost!

Leave that word for the low quality wines!!!
