Right Time For A Spotlight On TJ's Two Buck Chuck wine? YEP!
Right time?
Really!?!?
I have put this off through many, many posts! Yep, they are all linked below!
Every time I mentioned to people that I wrote about Trader Joe’s wines, people would ask: “Two Buck Chuck?”
I would answer:
NO!! Never tried it!
Well, now I feel I shouldn’t dismiss it like that without actually trying Charles Shaw wine. That’s the real name, by the way.
Do you know the history of Charles Shaw Wines? If you want to, here you go: (Skip if you couldn’t care less.)
Really short story: Charles Shaw was a person who owned a winery in Napa. He went bankrupt and the name of the winery was purchased. (Yep, that’s a thing.) The purchaser ended up buying a lot of really inexpensive grapes in California and making wine. He partnered with Trader Joe’s to distribute. The charging only $1.99 was showing that wine did not have to be expensive. It’s no longer $1.99 but the nickname stuck.
Keep reading where I get deeper into that idea! The picture above asks the important question:
Incredible Value wine OR Cheap is Cheap??
Not everything inexpensive is cheap. Sometimes it is, though,

Back to the story.
I am no longer near a Trader Joe’s wine store. So when I get to one, I stock up!
Yep! I wrote all about it in this post:
Two bottles of Two Buck Chuck are in there!
There’s even a YouTube link for the video about this in the post! I went all in!
Who knew there were so many Two Buck Chucks?
I thought there was just a white and a red.
Nope, there is a whole family of them:
Even more than that! But you get the picture!
I’m assuming you can tell that “two buck chuck” is two bucks no longer. It’s $4.49!
When I bought the two bottles, I wanted to be fair when I taste tested them. I only bought wine varieties that I believed I would like:
That means I chose a Chardonnay over a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Grigio. Neither of them are my go-to white wines. I actually have an extremely popular post on what fantastic other wines to drink instead of Pinot Grigio. See the related posts below.
I easily passed over a White Zinfandel because that is neither red nor white.
For the red, I easily could have picked any of the varieties, but I know that I like Red Blends so I picked that. Red blends just mean that no red grape variety is the star. Yep, I wrote about that too. See below in the related posts.
I have now tried both wines. I compared each of them in a blind wine tasting, and made YouTube videos about it. They’re fun and short.
Here’s the one on the Red Blend (the results did not turn out the way I thought it would):
You can just click on the picture to watch or this fantastic button:
Watch now or watch later. Why not? No down side.
Then we did the same type of thing with the Chardonnay. It, too, did not turn out how I thought. Here’s the video:
Again, watch now, or watch later. Subscribe even!
In case you just want to know how these tastings worked out, I will tell you.
I truly expected to like the Red Blend Two Buck Chuck. Both of us did not! If you are now asking, who is “us”, watch the video.
I usually can drink almost any red wine. This was was our least favorite of the wines by a long shot. The wines we compared it against were so much better. Some were barely a dollar or two more. All of them had been purchased at Trader Joe’s.
This wine was not good value at all for me! I cannot speak for the other red wines that are in the Charles Shaw collection.
I am so happy with other red wines that Trader Joe’s sells, I do not need to explore further into Two Buck Chuck territory. One favorite of mine is only 50 cents more.
As for the Chardonnay, it was so much better than I expected! It was great value for a Chardonnay! I would have no problem drinking it again, but there are other white wines I prefer that are available at Trader Joe’s.
Value is personal. So is taste.
Try the wines I recommend in all of my posts. See which ones give YOU great value.
Cheers!
